The Percentage Calculator answers the three most common percentage questions: What is X% of Y? X is what percentage of Y? And what is the percentage change from X to Y? Instant results for any values.

How to use the percentage calculator

There are three slots, one per question. The first asks "what is X% of Y?" โ€” type the percentage and the whole; the result is the part. The second asks "X is what percentage of Y?" โ€” type the part and the whole; the result is the percentage. The third asks "from X to Y, what's the percent change?" โ€” handy for working out a price increase, a stock move, or a weight-loss percentage. All three update live as you type. Negative results in the third slot mean a decrease; positive means an increase.

The formulas, written out

"X percent of Y" is (X รท 100) ร— Y. "X is what percent of Y" is (X รท Y) ร— 100. Percent change from old A to new B is ((B โˆ’ A) รท A) ร— 100. To increase a number by P percent, multiply by (1 + P/100); to decrease, multiply by (1 โˆ’ P/100). To reverse a percentage โ€” i.e. "the price is $80 after a 20% discount, what was the original?" โ€” divide by (1 โˆ’ P/100) so $80 รท 0.80 = $100. Confusing the direction is the most common percentage mistake.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 20% of 150?
30. The calculator computes this instantly: 150 ร— 0.20 = 30.
How do I calculate a percentage increase?
Subtract the original from the new value, divide by the original, multiply by 100. The calculator does this automatically with the "percentage change" function.
What is the formula for percentage?
Percentage = (Part รท Whole) ร— 100. For example, 30 out of 200 = (30 รท 200) ร— 100 = 15%.
What's the difference between percentage and percentage points?
If interest rates move from 4% to 5%, that's a 1 percentage point rise but a 25% relative increase. Confusing the two is a common journalism error worth watching for.
How do I work backwards from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 โˆ’ discount/100). $60 after 25% off was originally $60 รท 0.75 = $80.

Common uses

Working out a sale discount, calculating tax, sizing a tip, scoring an exam, comparing year-on-year revenue, working out body-weight loss, or splitting a percentage commission. The same three formulas cover most everyday questions about parts, wholes and changes.
